1-5 Valencia Blvd Bridge Overcrossing Replacement

Project Features:

  • Accomplished in a record time frame of 5 months from NTP to Construction.

  • Design per latest versions of ODOT BDDM and AASHTO LRFD

  • Design of the precast members for live load continuity with cast-in-place concrete diaphragm capable of resisting the vertical shear

  • Design of the composite concrete deck for the horizontal shear

  • Design of Wingwall and Railing for TL 5 vehicular crash load per AASHTO LRFD
The project features included (1) replacing the existing two-lane I–5/ Valencia Boulevard Bridge Overcrossing with a seven-lane structure. (2) Demolishing the existing I-5/Valencia Boulevard Bridge No. 53-1815 Overcrossing (3) modifying I-5/ Valencia interchange and adding one on-ramp from eastbound Valencia Boulevard to southbound Route 5 in order to complete a modified “Par-Clo” interchange (4) Providing signalized intersections at Valencia Boulevard/Old Road, Valencia Boulevard/ west Clover Loop on and off-ramps, and Valencia Boulevard/East Clover Loop on and off-ramps, and signal modification at Valencia Boulevard/Tourney Road. Signalization of intersections will be synchronized to improve safety and relieve congestion problems.

Athalye Consulting Engineers was responsible for the PS&E preparation for the bridge replacement of the existing Valencia Boulevard Over Crossing with a wider bridge to accommodate seven lanes. Included in this effort was the preparation of the Type Selection Report and preparation of the final PS & E. Unique aspects include stage construction, traffic handling and relocation or addition of over ten different utilities that included water line, So CA Edison, Pacific Bell conduits, CCTV conduits, and other electrical and lighting fixtures. Numerous non-standard architectural features were incorporated consistent with Caltrans safety and functional requirements. Site-specific seismic criteria conforming to Caltrans SDC Version 1.1 was utilized in completing this fast track project.
